Nagaland observes ‘World Consumer Rights Day’

DIMAPUR — Various organisations across Nagaland observed ‘World Consumer Rights Day’ on Friday on the theme ‘Fair and responsible AI for consumers.’  

In Kohima, more than 150 persons clad in traditional attires attended a programme organised jointly by the Kohima Law College and Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) at the Kohima Law College auditorium.

Delivering a keynote address, president of NVCO and assistant professor of Kohima Law College, Kezhokhoto Savi, has sought ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI), which has become increasingly integrated into the daily lives.

Besides, he spoke on Consumer Protection Act of 1986, Consumer Protection Act of 2019, Consumer Protection Councils, Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions, mediation, product liability and punishment for manufacturers or sale of products containing adulterated spurious foods to safeguarded against unfair business.

Savi further stressed on the importance to know basic rights of consumers such as (a) the right to be protected from all kinds of hazardous goods and services,  the right to be fully informed about the performance and quality of all goods and services, the right to free choice of goods and services, the right to be heard in all decision making processes related to consumer interests,  the right to seek redressal whenever consumer rights have been infringed and  the right to complete consumer education.

A short skit was presented by the final year students of LLB depicting a shopkeeper selling an expired cold drink.

A short presentation on food safety was presented by Wangshimeren Pongen and Vikeduo Kire.

In another programme, the Economics department of Immanuel College, Dimapur, organised a one-day workshop on World Consumer Rights Day with advocate Kumchuba, penal lawyer of Dimapur District Legal Authority, and advocate Otoli Kits at Gauhati High Court as the resource persons.

Kumchuba spoke on ‘Understanding consumer rights,’ while Otoli Kits  enlightened the students on the theme of the day ‘Fair and responsible AI for consumers.’

The Political Science department of Modern College in Piphema also observed ‘World Consumers Rights Day’ by organising a legal awareness programme at its auditorium.

Chongliu and Laknyei Phom, both advocate at Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, were the resource persons. They spoke on “Cyber law” and “Consumer rights” respectively.

Meanwhile, the Wokha District Legal Services Authority (WDLSA), in collaboration with the department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection and Wokha Consumer Rights Organisation, observed ‘World Consumer Rights Day.’

Advocate Thungbeni Kikon was the theme speaker, while panel lawyer of WDLSA, Renbonthung Tsanglao and Yangrothung Humtsoe were the resource persons.

The district and session judge of Wokha-cum-chairperson of WDLSA, Nino Iralu, who also spoke on the occasion, appealed to the people to come forward to seek legal help and advice in case of any complains relating to protection of consumers rights.

She stated that the department and the organisations are always there to extend support in order to protect the rights and welfare of the consumers.
