Kohima, Jan. 25 (EMN): The 9
th National Voters’ Day 2019 was observed on the theme “No voter to be left behind” at Hotel Japfu, Kohima, on January 25 with Sentiyanger Imchen, additional chief secretary and development commissioner, as the chief guest.
In his speech, Sentiyanger emphasised upon the significance of the day and appealed to the youth to register their votes. He was of the opinion that with the launching of National Voters’ Day, every eligible citizen of the country has the right to vote. He appealed to all young voters, registered voters and the disabled to exercise their voting rights with a clear and clean mind and not to vote for money, religion etc.
He also said that the Election Commission is doing its best to let every eligible citizen get enrolled to vote and also making special arrangements for the disabled and differently-abled.
Sentiyanger also asked the BLOs and the concerned authority to ensure that all genuine voters are given liberty to exercise their adult franchise with assurance of fair polling to every voter.
Hekani Jakhalu, chairperson of YouthNet, while sharing her speech for a vision of clean election, appealed the gathering to utilise their talents and asked them to be an agent of change. She further emphasised on corruption free election and also to spread the message of clean election to every single citizen in the state. “Let us not sell our vote, our right and our future,” she said.
Thejakhrienuo Nakhro, district Icon, Kohima, also gave a short speech on the “Role of youth in clean election.”
The programme was chaired by Thejawelie Gregory, deputy commissioner and district election officer, Kohima, and Vekho Vero, deputy chief electoral officer, presented the welcome address.
Kohima Chungtia Telongjem cultural club presented a traditional song as part of the cultural presentation. EPICs and National Voters’ Day badges were also presented to new voters from all the constituencies under Kohima district by Abhijit Sinha, CEO, Nagaland. Lithrogla Tongpi Rutsa, ADC and ERO, Kohima, pronounced the vote of thanks.
National Voters’ Day was also observed in all the district headquarters and sub-division. In all the programmes, newly enrolled voters felicitated and administered the voter’s pledge.
Meanwhile, state chief minister Neiphiu Rio has urged every citizen of India, especially the young voters, to actively participate in the political process, exercise universal adult franchise and keep the spirit of democracy alive.
