Dimapur, June 29 (EMN): Nagaland observed the ‘National Statistics Day’ by organising a programme at the directorate of Economics and Statistics in Kohima on June 29 on the theme “Data for sustainable development.”

Statistics day is celebrated every year on June 29 in recognition and to honor the birth anniversary of late professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, who was born on June 29, 1893, for his notable contribution in the field of economic planning and statistics.

Statistics day is celebrated to popularise the use of statistics in everyday life and sensitise the public as to how it helps in shaping and framing policies and also to create awareness among the younger generation on the role and importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation for the development of the country, a DIPR report stated.

It stated that the director along with the officers and staff of the directorate of Economics and Statistics celebrated the event in physical as well as virtual mode at its conference hall by joining the live streaming held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

The programme was addressed by the minister of state (independent charge) of the Ministry of Statistics and programmes Implementation, Ministry of Planning and Minister of State, Rao Inderjit Singh.
