Nagaland observes National Javelin Day with competitions across state

DIMAPUR — The Nagaland Athletics Association (NAA), in collaboration with eight district athletics associations, commemorated the third National Javelin Day on Wednesday.

As part of the commemoration, javelin throw competitions were organised in Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung, Noklak, Peren, Shamator, and Wokha, according to an update.

The NAA stated that National Javelin Day is an initiative of the Athletics Federation of India to serve as a meaningful tribute to Neeraj Chopra’s remarkable achievement at the Tokyo Olympics, where he secured the gold medal for India.

It was mentioned that the day is also celebrated to honour and promote the sport of javelin throwing and to inspire young athletes and sports enthusiasts to engage in different track and field events.

The competitions were organised for boys and girls in the age groups U-12, U-14, and U-16, and more than 650 athletes from across the state participated.

Dimapur: In Dimapur, the day was observed at Pilgrim Higher Secondary School.

Speaking on the occasion, Bithungo Kikon, president of the Dimapur Athletics Association, shared that the event celebrates the gold medal won by Neeraj Chopra at the Tokyo Olympics.

He acknowledged that Nagaland athletics is becoming increasingly active and extended his appreciation to Abu Metha, president of the Nagaland Athletics Association, and his team for recognising that engaging young athletes will yield better results.

He maintained that sports are crucial because they help inculcate discipline in athletes, and one must be disciplined to excel in sports. He hoped that such initiatives would make Nagaland athletics more fruitful and lead to participation at the national and international levels.

He further mentioned that technical officials would be observing performances, and if athletes met certain standards, they might have been selected for further training and to represent the state. However, they needed to reach the required benchmark and criteria.

Eight schools from Dimapur participated in the event, with about 150 children registering. The winners were given prizes and certificates, and all participants received a certificate.
