Nagaland observes Mahila Kisan Divas

Dimapur, Oct. 15 (EMN): To recognise the contribution of women farmers in agriculture, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Nagaland University, celebrated the Mahila Kisan Divas at Zaphumi village under Akuluto block in Zunheboto district.

Speaking on the significance of Mahila Kisan Divas, senior scientist and head of KVK, Zunheboto, Dr. Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, welcomed the participants and gave an insight on the important role played by women in agriculture sector.

The programme was conducted with an aim to create awareness about the vital role played by women in agriculture. The participants were engaged in group discussion on the topic “Role of women in agriculture and allied activities”.

During the interaction session, Dr. Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia and Wapangtoshi Longkumer, assistant chief technical officer (plant protection), spoke on the problems faced by women farmers in agriculture and allied activities and suggested the remedial measures.

Farmers were encouraged to take up mushroom production, vermin-composting and cash crops to increase their income.

The report stated that chairman, GB, women SHG members and other women farmers of the village participated in the programme and were provided with pea seeds.

In a related programme, KVK Mon celebrated the Mahila Kisan Diwas at its Aboi office with the participation of 24 farm women comprising various self help groups under Aboi sub-division on October 15.

The programme was chaired by ACTO (Animal Science), Dr. Paihem Michui, who also briefed on the multi-dimensional role of women in agriculture.
An update from KVK Mon stated that importance and advantages of kitchen gardening and uplift of rural women through adoption of organic farming was stressed upon by SMS (Soil Conservation) Imtinuksung.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks pronounced by S Monyu, office accountant-cum-superintendent.

In another programme, KVK Phek under ICAR-NRCM observed the Mahila Kisan Divas at Porba village in Phek district on October 14. The programme was organised to honour the contribution of women farmer in agriculture sector.

On the occasion, the importance and significance of Mahila Kisan Diwas was highlighted by Dr. T Esther Longkumer, senior scientist and head in-charge of KVK Phek.

To mark the occasion, an extempore speech competition on the ‘Role of women in agriculture’ was organised in which Nuvolu was declared the winner, while Puhulu and Nupalu were declared as the second and third runners-up respectively. Consolation prizes were given to Zhovehulu, Ciedusuhlu, Zashetsolu and Akholu.

The programme concluded with words of appreciation by Keniseto Chucha, farm manager.

A total of 31 farm women participated in the programme.
