KOHIMA/DIMAPUR — Joining with the international community, various institutions and organisations observed ‘International Yoga Day’ across Nagaland on Wednesday on the theme “Yoga for harmony and peace.”
Kohima: In Kohima, the International Yoga Day programme was held at Indira Gandhi Stadium (IGS), organised by the department of Youth Resources and Sports (YRS) along with National AYUSH Mission, department of Health and Family Welfare, Nagaland.
In his short speech, Nagaland Governor, La. Ganesan, expressed his happiness to the state government for organising the programme on International Yoga Day. He stated that yoga is not only the physical exercises but also included breathing techniques and mental conditioning.
He, therefore, urged everyone to practice yoga for healthy mind and body. He also highlighted the concept of the International Yoga Day, which was introduced by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, at the UN Headquarters in 2014.
The event was attended by the staff of Raj Bhavan; department of Youth Resources and Sports (YRS) led by the commissioner and secretary, Wezope Kenye, and director Kethosituo Sekhose; deputy commissioner of Kohima, Shanavas C; Nagaland Civil Service (NCS) probationers and other government officials; NSS volunteers, Indira Gandhi Stadium (IGS) academy students and others.
Dimapur: The 9th International Yoga Day was celebrated in Dimapur at DDSC Sports Stadium on Wednesday with Kropol Vitsu, advisor of Prisons, Printing and Stationery, as the guest of honour. The programme was organised by Patanjali Yoga Women Wing.
Speaking at the programme, Vitsu shared about how International Yoga Day is celebrated across the world annually on June 21 since 2015. He mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the one who relentlessly made efforts and explained the importance of yoga, which subsequently won recognition globally.
He further expressed gratitude to Modi for his achievement at the international level. He further reminded the participants on the benefits of yoga.
IGAR : Officers and staff of the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North) celebrated the International Yoga Day at Garrison helipad in the state capital.
Braving the rain, more than 650 participants comprising students, children, Assam Rifles ex-servicemen, troops and families of Kohima garrison, contingent from National Cadet Corps, taekwondo players among others took part in the event.
On the occasion, Mayank Vashistha and Krisanu Banikya, yoga practitioners from The Art of Living Foundation, took session on yoga.
Interacting with Eastern Mirror, Vashistha and Banikya quoted the message of Gurudev Sri Ravi Shankar, renowned Indian yogi, who said, “As the world celebrates the International Day of Yoga, it’s time for this ancient art of inner blossoming to be in the spotlight.”
“Yoga is a spiritual science. Knowing ‘What this is’ is science. Knowing ‘Who am I’ is spirituality,” they said.
Yoga is about aligning all the rhythms of life. It is the discipline of studying and harmonising our inner faculties. This wholesome life-skill can elevate the quality of one’s life and surroundings. It improves inner strength and outer connections, they added.
Meanwhile, the PRO (Defence) has acknowledged the two yogis for making a significant effort to travel and convey the importance of yoga.
BJP minority morcha: The BJP minority morcha celebrated International Day of Yoga at various places in Nagaland.
In Dimapur, yoga day was celebrated with about 130 participants at Lions Club, where Khevishe Sema, general secretary of BJP Nagaland, was the chief guest. Khevishe spoke on the meaning, significance and benefits of yoga.
The meaning of yoga, according to him, is to join which symbolises the union of body and consciousness. He added that yoga is the perfect way to unite body, mind and spirit.
Khevishe also inaugurated a photo exhibition on nine years of Modi government on the occasion. It stated that the day was also celebrated in Mokokchung, Phek, Mon and Longleng.

Mokokchung: International Yoga Day in Mokokchung district was observed at Tzudikong town community hall, organised by National Ayush Mission, DHFW Kohima. The programme was attended by Lt. Col. Ravinder Kumar and other officials from the Assam Rifles, chairman and members of Tzudikong Adhoc Town Committee, students, staff of AHWC Tzudikong, AWW.
Aosenla and Meren from AHWC Chuchuyimpang were the yoga instructors of the event. An update from CMO office stated that various wellness activities were also conducted throughout all the AB-HWC of the district to mark the day.
CBC Kohima: Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) Field Office, Kohima, in collaboration with Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kohima, celebrated ‘International Yoga Day’ at the KV School, Kohima.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest and DIG of CRPF, Manish Kumar Sachar, stated that yoga is a way of life and added that any physical exercise that makes one sweat and tired could be termed as yoga. He called upon the students to include sports and physical activities in their daily life. He stated that yoga, sports and physical activities help build stamina and energy and also enable one to sleep well.
CBC Field Office Tuensang also observed yoga day at Rajeswari Karuna School in Tuli. Among Aier, teacher at Yajang High School, while Lakshyajit Das, yoga teacher, led in the demonstration.
IAH: Integrated Ayush Hospital, Dimapur, supported by Nagaland state Ayush Mission Society and National Ayush Mission, observed International Yoga Day in the conference hall of the Dimapur District Hospital.
Speaking on the occasion, the deputy commissioner of Dimapur, Sachin Jaiswal, urged to practice yoga regularly for a healthier life. He added that yoga is a way of one’s life and not a religion. He, therefore, encouraged the gathering to perform yoga in their daily activities.
Several yoga exercises for upper and lower respiratory tract, lower back ache, right postural for pregnant lady, gastrointestinal tract and various relaxation posture etc. were demonstrated by Tiatemsu Ao, yoga instructor.
The Integrated AYUSH Hospital, Razha Chedema in Kohima also observed International Yoga Day with the participation of IAH staff, village council members and public of Kezo town and Sakhabama. Speaking at the event, Dr. Khonuo Mary Belho, medical superintendent, stressed on the importance of yoga in combating lifestyle related ailments.
Yoga demonstration was led by Dr. Elvis Kithan, MO of yoga and naturopathy.
KV: Teachers and students of Kendra Vidyalaya Dimapur from classes 1 to 12 participated in the International Yoga Day programme held at the school premises.
Dr. Sajida Siyahi, PGT of Economics, spoke on the theme and briefly explained the importance of yoga in one’s life, while Rahul Debnath of class XII (Science) spoke on the importance of union of body and consciousness and the philosophy originated in India about 5000 years ago.
The school principal, MH Shimray, elaborated on the original goals of yoga and highlighted how yoga could improve flexibility, balance and concentration of mind. Rito Deep of class X B and Hriddhi Nandan of class VIII B demonstrated yoga asanas to the participants.
LFI: NCC and Yuva Tourism Club of Livingstone Foundation International, in association with Livingstone Foundation Society and Breeze Women Welfare Association, observed International Day of Yoga by organising a mass yoga session.
It stated that several yogic asanas including Surya Namaskar, Halasana, Paschimottanasana, Bhujangasana, Urdhvahastasana and Ardhahalasana were demonstrated by mentors during the yoga session.
Chairman of LFI, Dr. Andrew Ahoto Sema, has exhorted the gathering on the health benefits of yoga in day-to-day life. He further encouraged the students and mentors to develop a habit of regular exercise including yoga session for healthy mind and body.
LFI also conducted quiz and essay writing competition on June 20. In the essay writing competition, Lialo Swu of Grade-XB won the first position, while Temjensola Walling of Grade- IXB and Rongdisen Pongen of Grade-XIIA Arts won the second and third positions respectively.
In the quiz competition, Mark House won the first position, while Matthew House and Luke House won the second and third position respectively.
PVHSS: Pranab Vidyapith Higher Secondary School (PVHSS), Dimapur, observed International Yoga Day with the participation of students from primary to secondary section. It stated that students as well teachers performed various ‘Ashana’ and yoga.
