Nagaland observes ‘International Day of Girl Child’

DIMAPUR — Nagaland celebrated ‘International Day of Girl Child’ on Wednesday on the theme “Invest in girl’s right: Our leadership, our wellbeing.”

The day is observed annually on October 11 to promote awareness about the importance of and potential of girls as the future of society.

Commemorating ‘International Day of Girl Child,’ Kohima district administration, in collaboration with District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Kohima, and Performing Art With Fitness (PAWF), launched a self-defence class at Rüzhükhrie Government Higher Secondary School, Kohima.

Speaking on the occasion, EAC and nodal officer of Mission Shakti, Moasunep K Jingru, gave a brief introduction to the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme. He highlighted the various BBBP activities carried out by the district administration in the field of sports and music and added that girls should not only excel in education but in other aspects too.

Delivering the welcome address, Lebu Krose, principal of Rüzhükhrie Government Higher Secondary School, expressed hope that the programme would enable the girls to be safe and more secure.

Also speaking on the occasion, the deputy commissioner of Kohima, Shanavas C, stated that the BBBP scheme was launched in India in order to tackle the issue of the declining sex ratio of females and stop the practice of female infanticide. He urged the girls to be ambitious and mentally strong to face any challenge.

The self-defence class was planned to be carried out in three government schools in Kohima, in collaboration with PAWF at Rüzhükhrie Government Higher Secondary School, TM Government Higher Secondary School and Dr, N Kire Government Higher Secondary School.

Commemorating ‘International Day of the Girl Child,’ Phek district administration and District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), felicitated the mothers and newborn girl child with gift hampers and certificates.

Speaking on the occasion, the SDO  and nodal officer of BBBP, Tsenthungo E Ngullie, highlighted the significance of the day. He stated that every girl child deserves to grow up in a safe environment and get equal opportunity in terms of education.

The programme was organised with the objective of encouraging and appreciating institutional delivery and promoting the security and education of the girl child.

Meanwhile, the Tseminyu district administration, in collaboration with the State Hub for Empowerment of Women, observed the ‘International Day for the Girl Child’ at Tseminyu town hall with Grace Ayee, Menono V and Tiamongla Kichu as the resource persons.

It stated that Grace Ayee has highlighted forms of gender-based violence and mechanisms to redress them, while Menono V has shared on service delivery mechanism under mission Shakti and Tiamongla Kichu highlighted on benefits of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY).

The keynote address was delivered by the additional secretary of Social Welfare, Bodeno S Colo and a short speech was presented by ADC Tseminyu, Longasen Lotha.
