DIMAPUR — The NNC/FGN, under the leadership of Zhopra Vero, has opposed the proposed installation of a Mountain Radar System by the Indian Air Force (IAF) at Pfutsero in Phek district, terming it “unacceptable” to the Naga people.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the group maintained that the proposal was taken up without consultation with the Naga people, who have long resisted militarisation and asserted their political rights.
It argued that such installations in inhabited areas undermine the “sovereignty and aspirations” of the Naga people.
The NNC/FGN alleged that the government of India has historically pursued policies that prioritise military and strategic interests over democratic engagement, citing past agreements such as the 1964 Indo-Naga ceasefire and subsequent prime minister-level talks between 1966 and 1967.
It further claimed that the continued imposition of laws like the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) reflects a disregard for humanitarian values and political commitments.

Expressing concern over the broader implications of the radar project, the group said that the expansion of military infrastructure could transform civilian areas into zones of surveillance and strategic vulnerability.
It warned that such developments may disrupt daily life, create psychological stress, and potentially expose the region to security risks, especially given its proximity to international borders.
The organisation also cautioned that the project could deepen as the “gradual militarisation” of Naga areas, rather than contributing to security.
It stressed that decisions of such magnitude must involve the consent and participation of the Naga people.
Calling for wider public engagement, the NNC/FGN urged civil society and stakeholders to critically examine the proposal and participate in informed dialogue.
