MVYO urges traditional names use
DIMAPUR — The Meriema Village Youth Organisation (MVYO) has appealed to all government departments, institutions, agencies and individuals to use the traditional and historically correct names "Meriema" and "Pfuratsie Junction" in all official and public communications. In a press release, the organisation stated that the names "Meriema" and "Pfuratsie" originate from the village's traditional heritage and carry significant cultural and historical importance that reflects the identity of the community. MVYO observed that the names "Merema", "Merima" and "High Court Junction" are frequently used in official correspondence, signboards and public documents. While acknowledging that the High Court serves as a prominent landmark, the organisation stressed that it should not replace the original name, "Pfuratsie". The organisation urged all government departments, public institutions and individuals to officially adopt and consistently use "Meriema Village" and "Pfuratsie Junction, Meriema Village" in all records, publications, signages and communications.
Phek hit-and-run accused held
Phek Police arrested an individual in connection with a hit-and-run case after the alleged driver, travelling on the wrong side of the road, knocked down two women pedestrians at Bible Hill Colony, Phek, on Friday evening. According to the police media cell, information about the incident was received at around 6:30 pm. A special police team was immediately dispatched to the spot and found that both injured women had been admitted to District Civil Hospital, Phek. One of the victims was pregnant. Doctors reported that both women were in stable condition at the time of filing the report. Police said the blue Maruti Celerio (registration number WB20AG3894) fled the scene after the accident but was later found abandoned near a garage in Zion colony. The vehicle was seized, and the absconding driver was apprehended by the Special Operation Team of Phek Police with assistance from the Phek Town Chakhesang Students' Union (PTCSU). A case has been registered and investigation is underway, police added.

CPO emergency meet on June 20
The Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO) has convened an emergency meeting with all executives of the organisation on June 20 at 10 am at the CPO hall, Chümoukedima In a press release, the CPO stated that the emergency meeting is being called to “discuss important issues that our people are facing currently.” Given the nature of agendas that require thorough discussion and collective wisdom, the organisation extended special invitation to the GBs and youth presidents from all constituent villages. All invitees have been requested to attend the meeting without fail.
Kapfo takes helm of Rattle & Hum
The Rattle & Hum Music Society inducted Wenyitso Kapfo as its new president during a formal ceremony held at Hotel Vivor, Kohima, on June 12. In his presidential speech, Kapfo acknowledged the successful tenure led by Neingulie Nakhro and particularly appreciated his tenacity and skills in meticulously documenting the activities of the society, among others. He also recalled how the society was formed as a "crazy dream" under the leadership of Theja Meru. According to the update, the Rattle & Hum Music Society was founded with the mission to educate artists across music, art, dance, theatre and literature on their crucial role in shaping culture and counter-culture. The society received the Governor's Gold Medal Award in 2020 for its contributions to arts and music. It has also collaborated with institutions such as the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), the Raj Bhavan and various Indian embassies worldwide, showcasing India's diversity.
Yakor village declared drug-free zone
The Yakor Village Council in Shamator district has declared Yakor village a drugs and alcohol-free zone following a resolution adopted during its general meeting in January 2026. The move comes in line with a resolution passed by the Yimkhiung Youth Organisation (YYO) on October 31, 2025, at Pungro, declaring the Yimkhiung region a "drug-free zone." The resolution was subsequently circulated to village councils for implementation, a DIPR report stated. In support of the initiative, a "No to Drugs and Alcohol" programme was organised by the Citizen Union on June 11, bringing together various stakeholders and village organisations. Addressing the gathering, Citizen Union advisor Apong Janger expressed appreciation to the village council, students' union, mothers' union and the Church for their collective commitment to the cause. He urged residents to uphold the village's decision and serve as role models for the wider community. Janger also appealed to other villages in the Yimkhiung region to adopt similar measures to curb the use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
Tizit hosts multi-speciality health camp
A free multi-speciality health camp organised by the Tizit Town Council under the 15th Finance Commission Health Grants was held at PHC Tizit on June 12. According to a DIPR report, SDC (Civil) Tizit, Tumben P Tsanglao, in his welcome address, appreciated the doctors for their commitment in participating in the health camp. He expressed optimism that the camp would benefit many residents, especially those living in remote areas. Doctors who offered their services included Dr. R Wonashi Tsanglao, senior consultant (Paediatrics), from CIHSR, Dimapur; Dr. Benithung Ngullie, senior consultant (Medicine), from Nikos Hospital, Dimapur; Dr. Nyamnyei Konyak, medical officer, District Hospital, Mon; and Dr. Wangba Konyak, sonologist and medical officer, PHC Tizit.
