Nagaland observed the 16th National Voters’ Day in Kohima, urging citizens to uphold democracy and vote without fear or inducement.

KOHIMA — On the occasion of the 16th National Voters’ Day, Abhijit Sinha, Principal Secretary of Home department, on Sunday urged voters in Nagaland to nurture and uphold the spirit of democracy and exercise their franchise without fear.
Eleven first-time voters were presented with EPIC cards during the state-level programme celebrating the 16th National Voters’ Day, 2026, held at Hotel Japfü, Kohima.
Addressing the programme, Sinha stressed the importance of strengthening democracy, stating that voters’ decisions should be made independently and conscientiously.
He cautioned against factors such as religion, political affiliations and inducements that could influence free choice.
Observing that voting is often not done willingly, he urged voters to uphold the spirit of democracy by voting fearlessly.
He also encouraged all eligible citizens to enrol as voters and participate whenever the opportunity arises, adding that democracy is strengthened only when voters actively exercise their rights and motivate others to do the same.
While underscoring the importance of the “spirit” of democracy, he said that it must be upheld both in letter and spirit.
In her message, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Nagaland Bhagyashree Banayat said that the theme, ‘My India, My Vote’, conveys a powerful and meaningful message, highlighting that democracy resides not merely in institutions and processes, but in the active and informed participation of citizens.
Her message was read out by Deputy CEO Toshimeren Aier.
She stated that National Voters’ Day serves as a reminder of the strength and vitality of India’s democratic system and reaffirms collective commitment to constitutional values of justice, liberty and equality.
Stressing the importance of youth and first-time voters, she said that their participation helps shape the future of the nation, noting that their voice, values and vision will define the India of tomorrow.
The occasion also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of the Election Commission of India and the entire election machinery, which work tirelessly to ensure elections are conducted in a free, fair, transparent and peaceful manner, thereby strengthening public confidence in democratic institutions.
At the event, Sentitula, a primary teacher and BLO of Polling Station No. 5, Alongmen Ward under 25-Mongya Assembly Constituency, was awarded Best BLO in the state. Best Campus Ambassador in the state was awarded to H Longching of Yingli Government College, Longleng.
Six Best BLOs from Kohima district were also felicitated.
Other highlights of the programme included a video message by the Chief Election Commissioner of India; and the administering of the National Voters’ Day pledge by the special guest.
