Nagaland makes smart prepaid electricity meter mandatory for all
Dimapur, April 1 (EMN): The government of Nagaland has issued a notification informing that the Power department will mandatorily install smart pre-payment meters for all categories of consumers in a time-bound and phased manner with immediate effect.
It informed that those areas or consumers where post-paid meters are still operational will not be brought under the ambit of communitisation of electricity till further orders.
The state government’s order is in compliance with the Union Ministry of Power’s directive to mandatorily install smart prepaid electricity meters for all categories of consumers.

The government of India’s Electricity Act, 2003
According to the Electricity Act, 2003, enacted by the Parliament of India to transform the power sector, “all government offices at the block level and above, and all industrial and commercial consumers, shall be metered with smart meters with prepayment mode by December 2023”. It went on to state that “all other areas shall be metered with smart meters with prepayment mode by March 2025.”
