KOHIMA — Newly elected Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), S Supongmeren Jamir, has called for a complete overhaul of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), emphasising the need to “restructure the working system” and screen activities within the party.

Speaking at a thanksgiving programme organised in his honour at Congress Bhavan in Kohima, Jamir underscored the importance of accountability and performance among party workers, particularly those in leadership positions.

Anyone holding a responsible post in the party should rethink their performance and ensure the trustworthiness of party workers, he added.

Jamir, who is also the NPCC president, went on to say that there should be a ‘screening-out, distillation and purifying of activities among workers’.

He expressed dissatisfaction with the area Congress committees and district Congress committees. Stating that they were “not serious” about their responsibilities, he called for restructuring the working system of these committees.

The MP urged the NPCC in its entirety to rededicate themselves and work hard, stating that the Congress high command has high hopes for them.

He also encouraged the members to connect with people at the grassroots level across all 60 assembly constituencies and work towards bringing the Congress back to power in the 2028 state assembly elections.

People came forward and gave the mandate to the Congress, and now, the responsibility is to serve the people with utmost humility, he said, asserting that the party is for secularism, tradition, culture and protection of minorities.

He assured that he would relay their suggestions and concerns without any bias.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of Nagaland, Ranajit Mukherjee said that BJP won the Lok Sabha election at the Centre but lost the people’s moral and emotional support.

Accusing the saffron party of “shutting down the voice of people everywhere”, he claimed that the speaker had refused to give the seven Congress MPs from the Northeast a chance to speak in the recent Parliament session.

Further, he said that the Congress party represents the people’s voice, and “will not tolerate” their voices being unheard.

Meanwhile, NPCC working president Khriedi Theunuo admitted that there was an internal issue regarding ticket distribution till the polling day but Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the AICC ultimately supported Jamir’s candidacy.
