Nagaland launches ‘Foot and Mouth Disease — Mukt Bharat’

Dimapur, Oct. 5 (EMN): Along with the rest of the districts, the department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) under the aegis of the Nagaland Livestock Development Board, Kohima launched ‘Foot and Mouth Disease – Mukt Bharat’ programme on Monday.

The programme was launched by AH&VS Director Dr. Budhi Lama by tagging, vaccination, serum collection and successfully uploading in the portal. The activity will continue in the state for another 45 days as part of synchronised vaccination with the north-eastern states, a DIPR update informed.

The department has appealed to all the villages, towns and wards to co-operate in the process of vaccination for the success of the programme in the state.

The ‘Foot and Mouth Disease – Mukt Bharat’ under National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) which was approved by the Union cabinet on May 31, 2019 as a new central sector scheme aims to fully eradicate foot and mouth disease by 2025.

The programme was the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare India freedom from foot and mouth disease so that livestock are made more remunerative in terms of milk and its by-products. Under this programme, vaccination on FMD is to be carried out in mission mode in all susceptible animals followed by traceability through ear-tagging using unique identification number and subsequent uploading in the NADCP portal, an update from DIPR informed.

Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Peren organised a programme for the launching of foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccination under National Animal Diseases Control Program (NADCP) on October 5 at Samziuram village. According to a press update,
Dr. Arun Kumar Sangwan, dean, College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Jalukie delivered the keynote address and launched the vaccination campaign. Sangwan explained about the NADCP for foot and mouth disease.

“The aim of NADCP is to control FMD by 2025 with vaccination and its eventual eradication by 2030,” it informed. He sought the co-operation and help of all the villagers for the programme. Under this programme, all the cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats and pigs of the country will be vaccinated twice a year.

Dr. H Toluvi Ayemi, chief veterinary officer, Peren, chaired the programme. Dr. Namsui Thou deputy chief veterinary officer proposed the vote of thanks.

Dr. Eyekhweshe Kepfoh, Dr. Asalie, Dr. Yovino Mekro, Dr. Suilube and other staff members of the department and villagers were present. The programme was launched by vaccinating a cow with the FMD vaccine at the Samzuiram village council hall, it added.
