Educational institutions across Nagaland marked Gandhi Jayanti with cleanliness drives, community outreach, dental camps and discussions on Gandhian values.

DIMAPUR — Educational institutions across Nagaland observed Gandhi Jayanti on October 1 and 2 with cleanliness drives, community outreach programmes and discussions highlighting Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of truth, service, civic responsibility and ethical conduct.
Nagaland University: Nagaland University observed Swachh Bharat Diwas on Friday at the conference hall of its administrative complex, commemorating Gandhi’s birth anniversary and honouring Safai Mitras for their year-round service in maintaining cleanliness and hygiene on the campus.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Gyati Yam, member of the Committee on Swachhata Hi Seva 2026. Dr. Likhase Sangtam, Nodal Officer and chairperson of the committee, said the campaign was not merely about cleanliness but about developing responsibility, discipline and ownership towards one’s surroundings.
He appreciated the participation of wardens, faculty members, officers, staff, NSS volunteers, students, scholars and Safai Mitras in activities conducted under the five pillars of Swachhata Hi Seva.
These included cleanliness drives, Waste to Wealth competitions, Mass Social Work and Jan Bhagidari, Swachhata Se Samriddhi, a Safai Mitra health camp and Ek Din Ek Ghanta Shramdaan.
A video showcasing the activities conducted from September 17 to October 1 was screened. Prizes were distributed to winners of the Waste to Wealth competition, while Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) was presented to Safai Mitras by Dr. Tovishe Phucho, NSS Programme Coordinator.

North East Christian University: The Political Science Programme of North East Christian University (NECU), Dimapur, in collaboration with the Indian Dental Association–Nagaland Branch (IDANB), organised a dental awareness and free check-up camp at Dimasa Community Hall, Doyapur village, on October 1.
Organised to mark Gandhi Jayanti, the programme sought to promote the Gandhian principle of trusteeship through professional service and community participation.
More than 350 people, including villagers, teachers and students from Government Primary School and Shalom Higher Secondary School, registered for the check-up.
The programme featured awareness talks on Gandhi’s role in decentralisation and social responsibility.
Students and faculty of NECU, dental professionals and assistants from IDANB and Doyapur Village Council members participated in the initiative.
Eastern Christian College: Eastern Christian College (ECC), Padumpukhuri, Dimapur, observed Gandhi Jayanti with a programme organised by its Internal Quality Assurance Cell on the theme “Gandhian Values: Ethics and Morality in Politics in the Contemporary World.”
Principal Dr. Dominic K. Khanyo highlighted Gandhi’s commitment to truth, simplicity, non-violence and service, stressing the continuing relevance of these values in public life and responsible citizenship.
Sao Chang College: The NCC Unit of Sao Chang College, Tuensang, conducted a cleanliness drive on October 1 from 3rd NAP Junction to the college campus.
Twenty-five NCC cadets, accompanied by the CTO, collected litter and cleaned roadside areas while spreading awareness about civic responsibility and cleanliness.
