Dimapur, Sep. 20 (EMN): Office of the Chief Medical Officer, Kohima and State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW) conducted a consultative meeting on gender-based violence (GBV) with health professionals from primary and community health centres on September 20.
An update from SRCW Nagaland informed that the meeting was held with special reference to Sakhi- One Stop Centre (OSC), 181- Women Helpline (WHL), Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) and Mahila Shakti Kendra (MSK). It was chaired by Dr. Asunu, DTO.
Gracy Aye, state coordinator, SRCW, gave an overview of gender-based violence stressing on various forms of violence like child sexual abuse, child marriage, domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual harassment at workplace and cyber crime. The need for a strategy to provide integrated services to survivors of gender-based violence was also deliberated at the meeting.
Vitsino Iralu from Women Helpline presented on the Medico Legal Care (MLC) guidelines given by the government of India with “clear directives to the entire health sector in uniformity, treating and documenting cases of sexual violence as MLC case.” She further elaborated on the need for all the hospitals and institutions in bringing out a standard operational procedure.
While emphasising on the reality of violence faced by women in the society, Dr. Joyce, president of Nagaland Medical Council, stressed on the need to strengthen collaborative effort of key departments, including the Health & Family Welfare, Social Welfare, Police and legal team to make Nagaland a safe place for women.
The update went on to say that Chothalu Phesao and Neilazotuo Pienyu highlighted the working mechanism and services provided by WHL-181 and Sakhi- OSC for the women in distress, while Kesoneinuo Kense gave a presentation on MSK and BBBP.
