DIMAPUR— Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan on Monday urged upon the people to conserve the environment and treat it as top priority to save the planet.
Speaking on the occasion of World Environment Day on the theme ‘Solution to Plastic pollution’ at Dr. Imkongliba Ao Hall, Raj Bhavan, Kohima along with staff of Raj Bhavan and Kohima Forest Division, Ganesan said global environmental issues such as climate change, deforestation and pollution are affecting everyone in their daily lives.
To mark the occasion, he also planted a ginkgo biloba tree in Raj Bhavan after the formal programme.
The governor stressed on the need to take action on plastic pollution, saying that the world is overwhelmed by production of plastic, using it more than it can recycle.
“Most of the plastic ends up in our environment causing hazardous effects to Humans, animals and nature,” he said according to an update from the Raj Bhavan.
The governor said that people should reduce the use of plastic in their daily lives and called upon each and everyone to reuse as much as possible as well as recycle.
Most importantly, one should educate oneself and people around us about the harmful effects of plastic and to collectively eradicate plastic pollution, he added.

He said it is an innovative green initiative which has the potential to not just increase the tree cover of the country but also to generate livelihood opportunities for the communities. He encouraged everyone to collectively participate in green initiatives to free the world from plastic pollution.
Earlier in the day, the governor launched the website clicktoplant.com and did the first online plantation as well as unveiled ‘Nino’ the Mascot. He also gave away the prizes to the winners of the oratorical contest for school students, wherein Vimeyono, a Class 3 student from Corragio School Kohima, won the first prize, while Kelhouvinuo Caroline Rutsa from Living Tree School, Tseiepugei (Class 10 student) won second price and Duve Khamo from Rev. Dr Neiliezhu Usuo Memorial School (Class 5) won third prize.
DFO Kohima Raj Kumar M also spoke at the programme attended by Chairman, EMC Touphema as well as students and teachers from GHS Forest colony, Kohima.
