As reported by this newspaper on Sunday, the first session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) will be conducted at 9:30 am on March 20, in the NLA Hall, Kohima, two weeks after the NDPP-BJP alliance returned to power by winning 37 seats in the 60-member Assembly.
Governor of Nagaland, La. Ganesan, summoned the first session of the new state assembly in a notice on Monday.
The House is likely to discuss matters related to the budget during its first session.
Sources had earlier told this newspaper that the swearing-in of the newly elected legislators might take place during the first session of the assembly and the Speaker will be appointed to lead the business of the House after a break.
The swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and his council of ministers (11) was held on March 7 in the presence Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and other dignitaries in Kohima but the remaining legislators are yet to take oath of office.
Sources said that former NLA Speaker, Sharingain Longkumer, might retain the same post for the 14th NLA.
It may be mentioned that out of the 37 elected members from the NDPP- BJP alliance, 36 of them have been allotted portfolios – 12 cabinet and 24 advisors to various departments — except Longkumer. Pro-tem Speaker, Mhathung Yanthan, has been allocated the portfolio of advisor for Agriculture department.
