Nagaland government will ‘abide by the flag code’, Deputy CM on its use by dignitaries

Deputy Chief Minister, Y Patton, on Monday informed that the privilege of flying the national flag on vehicles is limited to the president of India, vice-president of India, governors and lieutenant governors, and heads of Indian mission/posts abroad in the countries to which they are accredited.

He was replying to a starred questions raised by Imkong L Imchen from the opposition bench with regard to dignitaries who are entitled to put up the national flag and display the official position on their official vehicles. 

Patton went on say that the following dignitaries are also entitled to display the national flag on their official vehicles: Prime Minister and other cabinet ministers; ministers of state and deputy ministers of the Union; Chief Minister and other cabinet ministers of a state or union territory; ministers of state and deputy ministers of a state or union territory; Speaker of  Lok Sabha; deputy chairman of Rajya Sabha; deputy speaker of Lok Sabha; chairman of legislative councils in states; speakers of legislative assemblies in states  and union territories; deputy chairman of legislative councils in states; deputy speakers of legislative assemblies in states and union territories; chief justice of India; judges of Supreme Court; chief justice of high courts and judges of high courts.

He added that the national flag can be flown on any vehicle, but only by the aforementioned categories of dignitaries.

The deputy chief minister stated that the “government of Nagaland is following the practices adopted as per the flag code”. When queried whether it would consider reviewing the current practice of not displaying the flag/position/titles on the official vehicles of various dignitaries, he said the state government will “abide by the flag code”.
