DIMAPUR — The State Election Commissioner, T. John Longkumer, has said that the electoral process for the upcoming urban local bodies (ULBs) election is proceeding as per the schedule and requested the state officials to ensure a successful polling, keeping in mind the compliance made before the Supreme Court of India.

He said this during a review and co-ordination meeting with Chief Secretary, Home Commissioner, Commissioner and Secretary, Municipal Affairs Department, State Nodal Officer for State Election Commission and Police Nodal Officer at the Chief Secretary’s Conference Hall, Kohima, on Wednesday.

A delayed press release issued on Friday informed that the meeting was convened amid preparations undertaken by the State Election Commission and the government of Nagaland for a free, fair and smooth conduct of the municipal and town council elections, scheduled to be held on June 26.

Briefing the house about the preparatory measures, Longkumer said that “all necessary arrangements are on track”.

The chief secretary stressed the need for a close coordination between the election commission and the state government officers for a fair and peaceful polling, while the Police Nodal Officer and Home Commissioner updated about security arrangements.

The election to the 39 municipalities, consisting three municipal councils — Kohima, Dimapur and Mokokchung — and 36 town councils will be held on June 26 with 33 per cent reservation for women after two decades.

The number of wards reserved for women in each council varies, starting from three up to eight wards on a rotational basis.

The intending candidates for the civic body election can file their nomination papers from June 7 to the 11th, while the last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 18 and the date for vote counting is June 29.
