Dimapur, Aug. 7 (EMN): Mission director (MIDH) of Horticulture department, Nagaland, Dr. R.Elithung Lotha, officially flagged off three vehicles carrying 7500 kg (7.5 metric tonnes) of pineapples from Nagaland at Nagaland Gate on August 7.
The vehicles carrying the pineapples will reach different districts of Assam, according to an update from DPRO Dimapur.
Lotha dubbed pineapple as one of the signature crops of Nagaland, considered as one of the ‘best and sweetest world over,’ the update stated.
He stated that due to the present Covid situation, supply chains have been disrupted and added that lack of proper planning have left farmers in distress. However, he noted that with the constant support of the chief secretary of Nagaland, APC and commissioner secretary Horticulture, farmers are benefitting even during such extraordinary times.
He observed that organic fruits and vegetables are found in all corners of the state due to the participation of SHGs, including societies and individuals in marketing their produces. He also acknowledged the support of administration and municipalities towards the farming community.
‘There is marketing surplus that’s why we are sending it to Assam and these pineapples are fully organic certified,’ he maintained.
‘With today’s (August 7) flagging off, many more consignments would be sent out in various districts of Assam and beyond as per the demand. The Nagaland pineapples will reach out in Nagaon, Tezpur, Golaghat and Diphu which will further be marketed out again,’ he informed.
Lotha congratulated the farmers, especially Molvom and Bungsang villages, who come under Molsang Organic Pineapple Farmer Producers Company.
“We are not only sending pineapples but sending the sweetness of the produce of Nagaland, which is full of aroma, fragrance and nutrients required to be healthy,” read Lotha’s message to the buyers and consumers of Assam.
