Nagaland: Educational institutions observe ‘Earth Day’
Dimapur, April 22 (EMN): In pursuance to the recommendation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the educational institutions across Nagaland observed the ‘Earth Day’ on April 22 on theme “Invest in our planet.”
Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22. It is a reminder to protect the environment, restore damaged ecosystems and live a more sustainable life.
MHBHSS: The Ministers Hill Baptist Higher Secondary School (MHBHSS) in Kohima celebrated ‘Earth Day’ by organising various enriching activities for different classes with active participation of the students and teachers.
An update from MHBHSS stated that students from classes 1 to 4 were engaged in watching a nature themed movie to enhance their curiosity about nature and Science, while students of class 5 were given one pot each to plant their favorite vegetable and teach them hands-on activities about growing organic vegetables and its nutritional benefits.
It added that a collage competition on nature was held for students of classes 6 and 7, while an exposure visit to R Belho Wildlife Breeding Home was organised for students of class 8. Besides, a recycling art competition was conducted for students of classes 9 and 10, where the students projected an array of value oriented art piece to protect and preserve the planet.
Report further stated that the students were sensitised to conserve the bio-diversity through the event.
PWC: In a related programme, the Eco-Club of Pranabananda Women’s College (PWC), Dimapur, celebrated the ‘Earth Day’ in the college premises by organising a seminar.
Speaking on the theme, president of PWC Students’ Union, Sharmila Sharma, has emphasised on every individual efforts to maintain green environment, while a seminar on “The importance of rainwater harvesting to conserve water” was presented by the assistant professor of Environmental Science, Purnima Das.
The programme concluded with planting of tree saplings in the college campus.
GPSD: Government Polytechnic Seithekema-C Dimapur (GPSD) also observed the Earth Day by organising a tree plantation drive within the campus.
During a brief programme, the keynote address was delivered by its senior lecturer, Imnasangba Jamir, wherein he emphasised on the importance of ‘Earth Day’ and also laid out the activities of the day which included planting of two trees per person with a name-tag so as to inculcate a sense of personal responsibility.
Also speaking on the occasion, GPSD principal, Zhapulhoulie Rüpreo, urged the students and other participants of the function to not only develop awareness about the environmental issues affecting the earth but also influence others, especially law makers and legislators so that they come up with more effective policies to protect and preserve the earth and environment.
He also thanked Imkongsunep, Forest Range Officer of Chümoukedima, for donating tree saplings to GPSD.
Later, the students and faculty of the institute undertook tree planting and other social work activities.
