DIMAPUR — The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has expressed concern over reports of corporal punishment and mental harassment in educational institutions, stating that it has received complaints from students regarding such incidents.
In a press release issued on Sunday, the union stated that it had taken cognisance of several cases after receiving complaints from students and noted that similar grievances continued to be reported from time to time.
According to the DNSU, the recurrence of such complaints reflects a concerning trend that requires immediate attention and corrective measures.
The union reiterated that corporal punishment and mental harassment are prohibited under Section 17 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, which bars physical punishment and mental harassment of students. It stated that violations of the provision are liable for disciplinary action under applicable service rules.

The DNSU further pointed out that acts involving cruelty, intimidation or threats against students may also attract provisions under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, as well as relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The union cautioned against any attempt to threaten, silence or intimidate students from voicing their concerns, stating that such actions would be treated seriously.
Stating that schools should be safe spaces that promote learning, dignity and personal growth, the DNSU called upon educational institutions and authorities to strictly adhere to the law, uphold the rights and dignity of students, and ensure a safe, respectful and fear-free academic environment.
The union also warned that violations of legal and ethical standards relating to the treatment of students would not be overlooked. It further encouraged students facing such issues to report their grievances to the union through its official email address,
