Nagaland consumers briefed on their rights in Wokha

Dimapur, July 21 (EMN): The department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Wokha in collaboration with Wokha District Legal Services Authority organised a consumer awareness programme at VDBS hall on July 20.

Speaking at the event, ADC, Wokha Mhathung Tsanglao lauded the department for organising the workshop to bring about awareness among the general public and told the gathering that consumers should be aware of the products and goods they buy. He stressed on “how consumers can be protected against unfair and negligence on the part of the traders,” informed an update from Zuben, IA, Wokha.

District Judge and President of District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum, Wokha, Nino Iralu stressed on the legal aspects of consumer protection. She informed that there is a consumer court in the district and any consumer can approach it to seek quick redressal free of cost – no court fee or lawyer necessary.

She also pointed out that the consumers can order for reliefs like ‘removal of defects from goods, replacement of goods, refund of the price paid, award of compensation for the loss or injury suffered, withdrawal of the hazardous foods from being offered for sale and other services to protect the interest of the consumers.’

District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum Wokha member Yanvungthung Ngullie enlightened the gathering on the concepts and basics of consumer rights, saying that people have the right to choose, to be heard and to safety instructions and protection. He went on to say that “to substantiate our rights, we as a consumer have (the) duty to perform by way of reporting any kind of negligence on the part of the traders to the notice of the Consumer Redressal Forum or Consumer Court to claim his/her rights through proper channel.”

Assistant Controller, Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Wokha, T Aimong delivered the key note address at the event.
