DIMAPUR — The Nagaland Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee (NPMCC) announced on Monday that the party’s women candidates in the state will contest in at least 20 seats, if not more, in the upcoming state assembly elections as well as in the ULB elections.
While welcoming the Women Reservation Bill in a press statement, the NPMCC said that 20 seats in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly will be reserved for women and that women must seize the opportunities with gratitude, filling the reserved seats.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=1]Maintaining that women reservation has a long history and that the bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha as the 108th amendment during the UPA government in 2010, the NPMCC added that it could not be passed in the Lok Sabha due to opposition from the BJP and other parties.
“The basic objective of Congress is socialist secularism,” the note read, adding that the party believes in justice, liberty, equality of status, opportunity, and fraternity as expressed in the Preamble to the Constitution of India.
It said that the door is now open for women to participate in the decision-making and law-making processes and invited women to join Congress.
The NPMCC will also organise trainings to help members become legislators, according to the statement.
