Nagaland Congress hits out at government over ‘Constitution Day’ celebration
DIMAPUR — The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has hit out at the NDPP-BJP government in Nagaland for directing all the departments in the state to celebrate ‘Constitution Day’ on Nov. 24, by “reciting the Preamble of the Constitution of India”.
The NPCC, in a press release, alleged that the directive is expectedly in line with the “Modi government’s unconstitutionally undertaken backdoor removal of the same words from the Preamble in September this year”.
“A laudable initiative on the face of it, a closer inspection however reveals the absence of the words ‘Socialist’ and ‘Secular’ from the Preamble written on the circular, unmasking the proverbial devil in the details,” the NPCC said.
The NPCC pointed out that, for a state like Nagaland, which is home to one of the most marginalised religious communities in the country, the “removal of these words is particularly significant”. It added that despite the constraints over coalition politics, the chief minister could have echoed this sentiment instead of submitting to the majoritarian agenda of the political partner by “going with the Modi Government’s unconstitutional version of the Constitution”.
