Nagaland Chief Minister Rio inaugurates new district Shamator

Dimapur, March 4 (EMN): Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Friday formally inaugurated Nagaland’s new district Shamator, more than a month after the state government announced the upgrade of the sub-division in Tuensang into a full-fledged district.

Speaking at the inaugural event in Shamator, Rio said that it is apt to call it as “brotherhood district” while lauding the leaders of Yimkhiung and Tikhir for reconciling and choosing to coexist peacefully, according to an update from DIPR.

Citing the some complications faced before the creation of the district, he urged the people to leave the past misunderstandings behind and maintain a peaceful and harmonious environment for the society to move forward.

He also urged them to do away with land disputes, and instead provide land to the government for development purposes.

The CM said that top priority should be given to better road connectivity in order to move forward and highlighted the road projects taking place in the district under PMGSY and the two-laning of NH-202. He also informed that “a proposal called Trans-National Highway, connecting Showuba, Dimapur to Pangsha, Noklak via Chessore and Shamator, has been forwarded to the Central government”.

While stating that a cooperative bank would be set up at Chessore, Rio urged the people to come up with a tourist map considering tourism potential in the district.

The chief minister also took to Twitter to congratulate the people of Shamator and extended greetings on behalf of his colleagues and the state government.

Host and Advisor of IPR and Village Guards, S Keoshu Yimkhiung urged the people to coexist peacefully with everyone for mutual benefit, saying that society will progress when there is peace.

DC Tuensang, Kumar Ramnikant assured support and cooperation of Tuensang people, saying that “it will be like a parent to Shamator district”.

DC of Shamator, Thsüvisie Phoji gave a brief profile of the new district. He informed that Shamator has a population of 34,223 (2011 census) and 68.79% literacy rate.

While Commissioner of Nagaland, Rovilatuo Mor shed light on the journey towards creation of the district, Minister of Agriculture and Co-operation, G Kaito Aye; former minister Züngküm; CKS president Nungsanglemba; Yimkhiung Tribal Council president Throngsa Yimkhiung; and Tikhir Tribal Council general secretary W Tothong Philip also spoke at the event.

Cultural items were presented by Sukiur ‘B’ (Sumi), Shiponger village, Yakor village, Pungro village, Shamator village, Anatongre village, and Wapher village troupes.

CM Rio also laid the foundation stone of the DC complex and Village Guards Training Centre, Shamator during the occasion. He was accompanied by Minister, Planning and Coordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs, Neiba Kronu; Minister of Housing and Mechanical, Tongpang Ozukum; Advisor of Printing & Stationery, H Haiying; DGP Nagaland, T John Longkumer; and other senior government officials.
