NCHD-IT inaugurates a Community Seed Bank at Tethuyo village, Kiphire, to preserve indigenous seeds and promote sustainable agriculture.

DIMAPUR — The Nagaland Centre for Human Development and Information Technology (NCHD-IT) inaugurated a Community Seed Bank at Tethuyo village, Kiphire district, in a programme attended by L Tethsolen, chairman of Tethuyo Village Council, as the chief guest.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Tethsolen highlighted the growing dependence of farmers on external seed sources, which has led to recurring expenditure every farming season and gradual loss of indigenous seed varieties.
Accotrding to an update, he stressed that the establishment of the seed bank marks a significant step toward reclaiming control over local agriculture.
“With this seed bank, we are taking back control. We are preserving the seeds that belong to our land, our culture, and our future,” he said.

He further stated that the seed bank is not merely a storage facility but a centre of learning and collective responsibility. Farmers will be trained in seed selection, drying, preservation, and testing to ensure quality and resilience. The initiative will also promote seed exchange among farmers to ensure inclusivity and shared growth. He added that the seed bank represents sustainability and long-term agricultural security for the community.
Meanwhile, Atsoba Anar, project coordinator, NCHD-IT, stated that the seed bank would open avenues for income generation through the sharing and selling of seeds. He noted that traditional crops have growing demand in organic markets, which can help strengthen the local economy while safeguarding the environment.
“Most importantly, this seed bank is about independence. We are building a future where farmers are self-reliant, where children inherit seeds that are truly ours, and where communities thrive without dependency,” he added, mentioning that other crop varieties suitable to local soil conditions will also be preserved.
Seroba Sangtam, HEA from the District Horticulture Office, Kiphire, assured technical support to the initiative and shared words of encouragement, emphasising the importance of community-led conservation of indigenous agricultural resources.
