Nagaland celebrates World Ayurveda Day

DIMAPUR — The ninth World Ayurveda Day was held on October 29 at the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, Kohima, on the theme “Ayurveda Innovation for Global Health.”

On the occasion, Deputy Director (Ayush), Dr. T Bendangtula, highlighted various milestones achieved by the Ayush wing under the directorate since its inception, stated a press release.

She also conveyed the impetus provided by the government of India through the Ministry of Ayush in advancing Ayurveda within the Ayush system of medicine.

The keynote address on the theme was delivered by Dr. Khonuo Mary, in-charge medical superintendent, IAH Razha Chedema, Kohima.

She highlighted that Ayurveda, as an ancient system of medicine, remains prevalent and forms an essential part of society. She noted its growing global momentum, mentioning that around 150 countries now celebrate Ayurveda Day and that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has recognised its contributions to the health sector worldwide.

She stated that Ayurveda products manufactured in India are being exported to more than 100 countries worldwide.

Dr. Akhuo Sorhie, mission director, National Ayush Mission (NAM) and National Health Mission (NHM), highlighted various schemes and policies in the healthcare sector supported by the Ministry of Ayush.

She noted that the Ayush wing plays a role in implementing activities in the state, such as the School Health Programme, the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Programme, the Public Health Initiative Programme, the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), and the establishment of an Ayush drug testing laboratory.

The event also included the distribution of various medicinal plant saplings, including agarwood, ashoka, chamomile, and ashwagandha, to employees of the directorate of health and family welfare.

The saplings were provided by the Regional-cum-Facilitation Centre for the northeastern region, established by the National Medicinal Plants Board under the Ministry of Ayush at CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat.

Dr. Lanusunep, consultant for the State Medicinal Plants Board (SMPB) under Ayush, presented the benefits and importance of medicinal plants and provided an overview of the SMPB.
