Nagaland Cabinet approves separate district for Meluri
KOHIMA — The Nagaland Cabinet has approved the creation of a separate district for the Pochury tribe residing in Meluri sub-division of Phek district.
This decision, announced by Minister for Power and Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye, who is also the state government spokesperson, follows years of anticipation from the Pochury community.
Kenye said that the Cabinet has taken the decision to grant the Pochury community their long-felt desire for a separate district. “It will be created very soon,” he added.
The Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO), which shares Phek district with the Pochury tribe, had previously recommended Meluri sub-division as an Election District during its 41st general session in January 2023.
The CPO also issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the creation of Meluri as a separate district, stipulating that Chakhesang villages currently under the 20 Meluri Assembly Constituency would rejoin Phek district. This move, according to the CPO, would benefit both the Chakhesang and Pochury communities.
The Phek District Planning & Development Board (DPDB) had also recommended the upgradation of Meluri Sub-division to a full-fledged district on April 12, 2023.
