Kohima, Nov. 4 (EMN):
The leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Nagaland have condemned the arrest of Editor-in-Chief of Republic TV Arnab Goswami by the Maharashtra police on Wednesday morning for allegedly abetting the suicide of 53-year-old interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud Naik in 2018.

The Maharashtra Police's Raigad unit on Wednesday morning raided the home of Republic TV owner Goswami and arrested him, according to IANS. A senior police said that he was arrested in the abetment to suicide case of 2018, which had been closed earlier and has now been reopened.

BJP Nagaland state unit president Temjen Imna Along, who is also the minister for Higher and Technical Education, and Tribal Affairs, tweeted that ‘the Maharashtrian government's attempt to crush the democracy of the country cannot be accepted’. He was replying to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s tweet that drew a parallel with the Emergency era and an “attack on individual freedom and the 4th pillar of democracy”.

The arrest has generated sharp reaction from several BJP leaders, terming it as an attack on freedom of the press.

“Speaking from one of the vehicles, Goswami said he was assaulted, even as his colleagues addressed Supreme Court and High Court judges ‘seeking justice’ on live telecast of the developments,” reported IANS.
