DIMAPUR — Nagaland on Thursday became the first state in the northeastern region (NER) to start Aadhaar-linked birth registration (ALBR).

The initiative, which aims at streamlining birth registration by integrating it with Aadhaar enrolment for children in the 0-5 age group, was launched by the commissioner of Nagaland, Mhabemo Yanthan, in the presence of Neidilhou Angami, Director of Economics and Statistics, at the Commissioner’s Office on August 31, said an update from DIPR.

The service was initiated jointly by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, which serves as the registrar for birth and death for the state, and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) as a registrar cum enrolment agency for child enrolment via the ALBR process, it updated.

Speaking at the event, Yanthan highlighted the pivotal role of Aadhaar-linked birth registration in enrolling newborn babies and ensuring the inclusion of children aged 0 to 5 years.

He also urged the co-operation of the state government officials to ensure the successful implementation of the initiative in all the districts so that no child is deprived of the social welfare schemes meant for their benefit.

Col. Abhishek Koushik, Director of UIDAI, lauded the government of Nagaland for leading the North Eastern Region in implementing ALBR and the consistent efforts of the Office of the Commissioner in providing Aadhaar-linked services to the people of the state.

UIDAI has been actively supporting states through workshops, door-to-door enrolments, and reaching to the remotest areas to help the people benefit from the Aadhaar ecosystem. It was also informed that the UIDAI Regional Office in Guwahati has been working closely with the Office of the Commissioner, Nagaland, which serves as the nodal department for Aadhaar-related activities in the state.
