Dimapur, July 3 (EMN):
Nagaland government on Friday announced a ban on commercial import and trading of dogs and sale of dog meat in the state.

“The state government has decided to ban commercial import and trading of dogs and dog markets and also the sale of dog meat, both cooked and uncooked. Appreciate the wise decision taken by the state’s cabinet,” Chief Secretary Temjen Toy tweeted.

Popular animal activists group, People for Animals (PFA) had started a campaign on their Instagram page, urging its followers to write a letter to the chief secretary asking him to put an end to animal cruelty.

The Instagram page of PFA had posted: “Two dogs were allegedly shot in Changki village in Nagaland by the village council. One of the dogs, Zoey was out for a walk with his owner when he was shot dead. A shoot-at-sight order for dogs has apparently been declared in the state. We are again reminding about our peaceful and civil protest against the heinous activities of dog killing and eating in Nagaland.

“Please write to the chief secretary of Nagaland asking him to put an end to this cruelty against the voiceless. Help us reach more than 50,000 emails.”

However, the decision of the Cabinet to ban commercial import and trading of dogs has created confusion among pet lovers. Some wondered if commercial import and trading include those for pet purpose.

When this newspaper tried to contact the chief secretary to clear the confusion and the announcement coming soon after the email campaign by the PFA, he was unable to attend to the calls.
