Dimapur, March 13 (EMN):
An autorickshaw driver in Dimapur has been accused of passing lewd remarks at a female passenger on Saturday.

The victim, while speaking to Eastern Mirror, alleged that the driver had ‘overcharged’ the fare. “The auto driver was charging INR 250 from 5th Mile to two-and-a-half mile, which is absurd and overcharging for no reason,” she said.

She informed that she gave him INR 200 but ‘instead of accepting the fare, he kept on shouting’ at her.

The victim further stated that the auto driver drove a few metres, only to return and threaten her while passing lewd remarks. It was then that she decided to call the Dimapur District Auto Drivers’ Union (DDADU) president.

The president of DDADU, Tito Yepthomi, informed this newspaper that they would ‘discuss’ the matter and take appropriate action according to the union’s guidelines, saying that whenever they receive any complaints from the public, ‘they always take action and settle the issue’.

The DDADU president also issued a press release stating that upon hearing the complaint from the victim, the union had called an emergency meeting on Saturday at its head office and summoned the said autorickshaw driver.

It informed that the victim also attended the meeting, and the matter was resolved ‘after the driver asked for forgiveness’. It further stated that both parties had reached an amicable agreement and strict action would be taken as per DDADU guidelines.

It also stated that new guidelines and SOPs were yet to be issued by the district administration and RTO and the rates would remain the same. However, it warned that overcharging of fare by drivers would not be tolerated and strict action would be taken against them ‘if found to be doing so’.

Public can complain to the union if they face any issue with autorickshaw drivers, it added.
