Nagaland Athletics announces new office bearers
Election of a new team of Nagaland Athletics office bearers for a four-year term announced
KOHIMA — Nagaland Athletics (NA) president Abu Metha has announced election of a new team of NA office bearers for a four-year term.
Metha made the announcement during a press conference on Saturday, September 2, at the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) office complex in Kohima.
The new office bearers were introduced soon after their annual general meeting which was attended by an AFI observer.
Metha will continue to lead the organisation as its president.
The team of Nagaland Athletics includes Khriehutuo Tsita as senior vice president; Wennyei Konyak – vice president; Dziesebeinuo Vizo – vice president; Mhonsao Ngullie – honourable secretary; Neingulie Nakhro – treasurer; Purna Konyak – senior joint secretary; Asakho Joseph – joint secretary; C Tongen Thai – joint secretary.
The technical communication comprises of Bithungo Kikon as the convenor with Rongsenmeren and Nekhoto Tunyi as members.
Vikeduo Linyü will be the convenor of the media committee with Asalie Peseyie as co-convenor while the development committee would be led by Ketoulhoukho V Keditsu as convenor.
As per the directive from AFI, it was informed that about 90% of the office bearers were either former sportspersons or retired players out of which 30% are women.
Apprising about Nagaland Athletics which is affiliated to Athletics Federation of India (AFI), Metha highlighted the achievements and initiatives of NA.
He informed that they had conducted state cross country trails for the 56th National Cross Country Championships while organising a national level coaching camp ahead of the event in 2022.
He said NA also conducted the 56th National Cross Country Championships and South Asian Cross Country Championships successfully, which is Nagaland’s biggest sports event till date.
Nagaland was the winner of silver medal in the national team championship (women) during National Cross Country Championships.
Metha informed that they would rope in professionals to train coaches and officials from various sporting disciplines with an aim to produce good athletes from the state.
Recalling a documentary film titled ‘The Finish Line’ which was screened at the Hornbill International Film Festival, Metha who was also appointed as the Country Chairman of the Mountain Running Committee apprised how he attended the AFI Executive Meet on May 27 and AFI general body meeting on May 28 and the 29th in 2022.
The 1st State Open Javelin Throw Championship was organised by Dimapur Athletics in collaboration with Nagaland Athletics while their participation in the Nagaland Olympic and Paralympic Games in Kohima as well as in the National Games for the first time at the 36th Gujarat National Games on September 30, 2022 were highlighted during the press conference.
Nagaland created history by winning 23 medals at the North East Olympics in Shillong, Meghalaya last year, including nine gold, four silver and 10 bronze while the state also bagged Best Atletes in Senior Men’s and Under-20 Girls which is said to be Nagaland’s best event performance in these games.
Nagaland Athletics also held the Great Hornbill Run and conducted Olympic Day Run on 2022 at IG Stadium in Kohima while this year on February 21 while they attended the AFI Executive meeting which was followed by a seminar in Kids Athletics at NS NIS Patiala organised by AFI.
After taking part in the National Sports Conclave in Delhi, Kids Athletic Day was held in the Sports Training Centre in Dimapur on May 9 this year.
