Nagaland: Agitation for creation of Shamator district enters Day-5
Dimapur, Jan. 7 (EMN): The Yimkhiung women under the aegis of Yimkhiung Women Organisation (YWO) spearheaded the Day-5 agitation for upgrading Shamator sub-division of Tuensang district into a full-fledged district.
Hundreds of women clad in traditional attire and holding placards hit the streets on Friday, shouting slogans to fulfil their demand for a new district
A brief programme was held at Pungro, Shamator and Chessore where “the speakers reiterated demand for Shamator district and made a fervent appeal to fulfil the long-felt aspiration of Yimkhiungs to live under one unified Yimkhiung district i.e., Shamator”, informed an update by Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC) media cell.
“Agitation will continue and intensify if government fails to fulfil the demand of Yimkhiung people,” read the press release.
It added that ‘the tribal body had sent out a strong message for inclusion of all Yimkhiung-inhabited areas in the demanded Shamator district’.
As part of the agitation, the YTC had ‘shut down government offices and business establishments at Pungro town under Kiphire district as well as Shamator and Chessore towns’.
It has also prohibited entry of visitors at Mt. Saramati, Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary, Stone Caves at Mimi and Salomi. ‘The Likimro Hydroelectric Power Plant (LHPP) has also been completely shut down by YTC volunteers since January 4 and volunteers are camping at the site,’ read the statement.
The YTC has been holding peaceful protest rallies in areas falling under its jurisdiction since January 3, from 9 am to 12 noon, over failure of the Nagaland government in granting its demand for Shamator district.
