Nagaland: 24 injured in pre-poll scuffle; 144 CrPC imposed

Mokokchung, Dec. 29 (EMN): About 24 persons were injured in an alleged pre-poll violence which broke out on December 28 evening at Khar village under Mangkolemba sub-division in Mokokchung district, police sources said.

As per police report, two intending candidates’ supporters were involved in the incident, which allegedly involved stone pelting and use of firearms.

Police stated that information of the pre-poll violence was received at around 4:30 pm and security forces were immediately deployed to Khar village and the situation was brought under control.

According to the police, 24 persons were injured in this scuffle and shifted to Dr. Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital for treatment. Chief Medical Office, Mokokchung informed that three ambulances were sent from Mokokchung to shift the injured persons.

Police Station Mangkolemba OC also informed that a case has been registered in this connection.

Meanwhile, Mokokchung Deputy Commissioner, Shashank Pratap Singh, issued prohibitory order under section 144 CrPC after the ‘election-related violence in Khar village resulted in physical injury, damage of the houses and private vehicles’.

The order prohibited assembly of more than five persons and carrying of lethal weapons and firearms including lathis, daggers or machetes, spears or any other sharp and dangerous weapons in the Khar village jurisdiction.

The order came into effect from 9 pm of December 282 and would remain enforced for the next 48 hours subject to extension of the prohibitory orders.

It further stated that in pursuance of section 21 of the Arms Act, 1959, all the arms license holders in Khar village were directed ‘for deposition of their firearms to the nearest police station with immediate effect’.
