KOHIMA — The commissioner and secretary of PWD (Works and Housing), Kesonyü Yhome, on Saturday called upon the younger generation to strive for creating a positive lifestyle in society by embracing one's language, culture, and tradition.
Speaking at the 29th Spero Meliora 2023 programme held at Kohima village council hall, he said that those virtues could be achieved through various initiatives such as promoting language education and organising the cultural event.
“The younger generation must be encouraged to take an active interest in their roots and instil in them a sense of pride for their language and heritage. By doing so, it can ensure forefathers' traditions and culture continue to thrive for generations to come,” Kesonyü Yhome said.
While acknowledging that many languages are on the verge of extinction, the commissioner stated that heritage would be lost ‘if action is not taken now.’

It is through our language that we communicate our customs, values, and stories from one generation to the next.
In this regard, he called upon all to come together and work towards safeguarding the cultural heritage.
Kesonyü Yhome also talked about creating more job opportunities, promoting entrepreneurship, and supporting each other in achieving independent livelihood. He said that no job should be seen as too big or too small and that everyone should be willing to start small and work their way up.
He also urged the village council, community leaders, and individuals to come together and support each other in promoting employment opportunities and economic growth. He pointed out there was a need to appreciate and learn from the struggles of others.
Kesonyü Yhome encouraged everyone to explore and study how people in remote areas live in order to gain a better understanding of their struggles and find ways to help improve their lives.
He has further called for unity and cooperation saying that by coming together as a society, they could aim for greater development and progress in the state.
The Spero Meliora event was organised to enable all the four khels of Kohima village including Tsütuonuomia, Pfuchatsumia, Dapfhütsumia, and Lhisemia come together and compete in various literary competitions.
It also serves as a platform for students to gain confidence, learn from each other, and interact with like-minded individuals.
