Naga students in Mumbai, Mangalore celebrate fresher’s meet
DIMAPUR — Nagas Students’ Union Mumbai (NSUM) celebrated its 52nd annual Nagas Meet-cum-fresher’s day on October 16 on the theme “Retracing our roots.”
An update from the union stated that the day was marked with various activities and inspiring speeches that highlighted the importance of unity, diversity, and hard work within the Naga community. It added that participants were encouraged to reflect on their cultural heritage and identity and to never forget the connection they held with each other.
During the formal session, the guest of honour, Dikshit Gedan, spoke on the significance of acknowledging the diversity within the Naga community and recognising each other’s fellow tribes.
The guest speaker, Shelehu Pao, spoke on the importance of hard work, perseverance, and faith in God to achieve one’s dreams. He also spoke about the value of family, cherishing one’s parents and staying connected with them.
During the informal session, songs were presented by guest artistes KL Pamei and a rising rapper, Aiden Young. A traditional fashion show showcasing the rich Naga culture was also presented by the students.
Happy Rose Lanah and Truvi Rhi were crowned Miss and Mister Freshers.
In another programme, Naga Students’ Forum Mangalore (NSFM) celebrated its 16th fresher’s meet on October 1 at Hotel Plaza Avenue, Mangalore, with Vidya Dinker, a social activist, as the chief guest.
A union press release stated that Dinker has motivated the students to be adventurous and grab every opportunity that comes their way.
The welcome speech was delivered by Kevilhoukhonuo Yiese, who also delivered the presidential address, while a song was presented by the students of Nitte University.
It stated that Ngaopoulou Sou and Arenbenla Longchar were crowned Mr and Miss Freshers 2023.
The union has also elected the executive board for the year 2023-2024 led by Kevilhoukhonuo Yiese as president, Suiyile Disuang as vice president, Janbeni Shitiri as general secretary, Magdalene as treasurer, Atolito Bolly Chophy as PRO, Atyty Tep as assistant general secretary, Matohung Chahongnao as sports secretary and Loli as cultural secretary. It has also elected Kaini Cecilia and Christy Shimray as advisors.
