Kohima, April 27 (EMN): The 29th general conference of Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has been rescheduled to April 30 and it will be held at Solidarity Park in Kohima on the theme ‘towards harmony’.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, NSF President Ninoto Awomi said the conference was initially proposed to be conducted at Ukhrul town in Manipur but the venue has been changed to Kohima due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Unlike previous general conferences, the federation has invited only limited delegates this year with an expected attendance of 150 to 200 delegates and the SOP will be strictly adhered to, he informed.
Convener of the central organising committee, Subenthung Kithan informed that the NSF general conference usually witnesses delegates from all the Naga contiguous areas as well as the city-based student organisations. However, given the pandemic situation, NSF has invited only five delegates from its federating units and two from sub-ordinate bodies.
Speaking about the theme, he said NSF normally coined the themes for general conferences only after taking its federating units and supporting student bodies beyond Nagaland into consideration.
However, he said that Nagas were at a ‘crucial’ juncture at this moment and were in ‘need for harmony to exist’.
“Keeping in mind to live in harmony within Nagaland and outside, the theme for this year was focused on harmony,” he said.
NSF had conducted its previous general conferences in Manipur and Assam except Arunachal Pradesh.
Chief Commissioner of Election Commission, Elu Ndang informed that the NSF’s procedure of conducting elections was one of the ‘best’ democratic processes.
“The kind of system that NSF adopted is the most transparent, the best system that others can take an example from it,” Ndang said.
He said that there are five contesting candidates for the post of NSF president, and two for general secretary. However, that may be subject to changes later on. The issuance of forms will start on April 29 and close on the 30th. Voting will be done through a secret ballot and there will be two votes each from all the federating units counting to 34 total votes, he added.
The election for NSF new office bearers for the next tenure (two years) will be held from 3 pm to 5 pm; oath-taking and issuance of certificates to elected candidates will be held on the same day. The special guests for the occasion are Tongpang Ozukum, former NSF president and minister for PWD (Housing and Mechanical); Y Vikheho Swu, former NSF president and MLA; and Akum Longchari, publisher of The Morung Express.
