Imphal, June 23 (EMN): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led coalition government in Manipur will be reintroducing government public transport systems from Sunday by utilising ten buses for the fourteen different routes in the state capital and districts.
Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh will flag off the Manipur State Transport (MST) bus services besides commissioning the Inter-State Bus Terminus complex at Khuman Lampak in Imphal on Sunday.
The state transport department will not charge any fare from the public on the launching day of MST bus services.
State Transport department also aims to bring in the private transporters in the near future under public private partnership (PPP model) understanding their contribution in the transportation sector.
However the revival of the State Transport Department will be a huge challenge to the Department because of the financial shortages, says Transport Commissioner M Lakshmikumar Singh.
MST bus service will be operational after a hiatus of almost a decade after the Chief Minister expressed his desire to solve the problem of commuters at the earliest considering the poor transportation facilities and traffic congestion in the State.
Seeking co-operation for a successful operation of the bus services in the State, as maximum people involved in road accident were found using fake driving licenses, he said, fake licenses, especially manual licenses, are being monitored and investigation is being handed over to the CID Crime Branch, he added.
Transport Director C Arthur Worchuiyo said critical areas have been identified and initial steps will be taken up by posting traffic officials in the critical areas.
He further said that the route of the City Bus service will be in clockwise and anti-clockwise direction to curb vehicle shortages at present and also for the convenience of the commuters.
The Ring Round City Bus service will be stationed at ISBT and MSRTC Complex both in Imphal and it will ply on all the important roads in Imphal East and West districts while the Inter District Bus Service will ply across Thoubal, Kakching, Bishnupur, Noney, Chandel,Tengnoupal, Pherzawl and both Imphal districts and vice-versa.
