Mudslide disrupts traffic on National Highway in Kohima
KOHIMA — A truck bound for Manipur got stuck in a mudslide on National Highway near LerieChazou in Kohima on Sunday morning.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 3 am, when the truck carrying goods slid towards the edge of the road while making a turn.
Perched precariously on the edge, the heavy vehicle was in danger of crashing into houses below the landslide area near the NST junction. Fortunately, authorities swiftly responded, and the truck was removed from the mudslide area before noon.
The Kohima Deputy Commissioner, Kumar Ramnikant, told this newspaper that police and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) were immediately mobilised to move the truck from the site.
The truck was unloaded and moved to a stable location around 11 am.
Ramnikant said that mudslides occur frequently, especially during rains, and an excavator is stationed daily to clear the debris. He noted that if the incident had not occurred on a Sunday, the situation would have been worse.
The mudslide restricted traffic flow in the affected area to one-way travel.
The officer-in-charge of South Traffic Control in Kohima confirmed that the truck got stuck in mud that slid down from a higher elevation, making the road muddy and difficult to traverse. He warned that debris might continue to fall, and similar incidents could occur if it rains again.
