DIMAPUR — The Morung Experience Centre (MEC) at Khonoma village, Kohima district, under the Forest & Biodiversity Management in the Himalaya (Nagaland) Project (FBMP) and funded by German Development Cooperation through KfW Development Bank, was inaugurated on November 29.

The event marked a major milestone in strengthening eco-tourism, cultural heritage and biodiversity conservation in Khonoma, a DIPR report stated.

Dr. Florian Wieneke, Senior Portfolio Manager at Natural Resources & Climate Asia, KfW Development Bank, attended the event as the special guest.

In his address, Dr. Wieneke appreciated the dedicated efforts of the project team, the local community and the state government in conserving biodiversity while promoting sustainable livelihoods.

He noted that the inauguration of the MEC marks the successful end of a two-year journey after the 25 years community conservation celebrations were announced in 2023. He lauded the Khonoma villagers for over 25 years of outstanding community-led conservation efforts, making the village a model for Nagaland and the country.

The MEC stands as a symbol of community ownership and partnership, with about 22% of the total project investment contributed by the people of Khonoma through land, resources and labour.

“The initiative is recognised as a flagship intervention under the FBMP, reflecting strong collaboration between the community and project partners,” the report stated.

Dr. Wieneke expressed hope that the centre will continue to inspire conservation, learning and community development for generations to come. He also stated that the MEC will serve as a knowledge hub for visitors to learn about the cultural values and ecological significance of Khonoma, while contributing to eco-tourism, environmental awareness and the preservation of traditional knowledge systems.

Earlier, the programme began with an inaugural prayer by Rev. Tsolie Chase, senior pastor of BCK, followed by the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
