More than 100 pigs die in Meghalaya; no such cases in Nagaland
DIMAPUR — Amid reports of pig deaths in Meghalaya due to the outbreak of African swine fever (ASF), an official has said that no such cases have been detected in Nagaland this month.
Around 117 pigs were said to have died in four districts of Meghalaya over the past few weeks due to the ASF.
The Director of ASF Core Committee Nagaland, Dr. Kriekuolie Linyu, told Eastern Mirror that ASF cases were reported at a pig breeding centre on the outskirts of Tuensang on March 10, prompting the concerned department to take precautionary measure to prevent spreading to other areas.
The department managed to control the situation effectively by culling about 100 pigs, including piglets at the breeding farm, he said, added that it was the only reported case of ASF in Nagaland this year.
No other cases have been reported in the state since, he added.
Meanwhile, Dr. Manjunatha C, the Secretary of the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry department in Meghalaya, had updated that around 50 pigs had succumbed to the illness (ASF) at a government farm located in Dalu, situated in the West Garo Hills district, according to PTI.
It added that five more pigs had died at another government farm in Pynursla, which is situated in the East Khasi Hills district.
