Dimapur, May 17 (EMN):
Another batch of drivers left for their home state Bihar on their autorickshaws from Dimapur on Sunday.

The president of Dimapur District Auto Drivers Union (DDADU), Tito Yepthomi, informed that 16 of them, including their families, left in four autorickshaws after receiving clearance and permit for movement from the Dimapur district administration.

‘We cannot continue to live with no source of income here due to the lockdown. We had spent a good amount for almost two months without any income. We cannot continue to risk ourselves and depend on relief for the coming days with the continuation of lockdown,’ an autorickshaw driver told media persons before embarking on their journey to Bihar, which will take them four days and four nights.

Another autorickshaw driver said, ‘It is the plantation season in the village. So if we reach home at least we will have some work to do and we can be sure to get two square meals a day. Sitting idle here with no source of income for survival and no other means to earn, it is better for us to be home.’

The autorickshaw drivers however conveyed they would return once the lockdown is lifted and continue riding their autorickshaws.

The DDADU president handed INR 500 each to the second batch of autorickshaw drivers as well.
