Monyakshu village in Mon declared a 'no plastic zone'
Wiridin and others during the declaration of Monyakshu village as a ‘no plastic zone’ and the launch of the Green Community Club in Mon district on Monday.

DIMAPUR — A declaration programme for Monyakshu village as a ‘no plastic zone’ and the launch of the Green Community Club took place on Monday at the village council hall of Monyakshu, Mon district.

The programme was jointly organised by the district administration, Forest department, Mon, and all the stakeholders of Monyakshu, namely Monyakshu Village Council, Monyakshu Village Students’ Union, KNSK Monyakshu Unit, Monyakshu Village Baptist Church, and Monyakshu Citizens’ Union, according to a DIPR report.

It stated that the declaration and launching programme was organised with a vision and objective to eliminate the single use of plastic materials and significantly reduce plastic waste; to foster a culture of sustainability, reuse, and recycling; to protect water sources, soil, and wildlife from plastic pollution; to promote eco-friendly alternatives and innovative solutions; and to educate and inspire neighbouring communities to adopt similar initiatives.

It was attended by the SDO (civil) in charge of Monyakshu HQ, Wiridin, as the special invitee, who made the declaration and launched the programme in the presence of the forest range officer, Tobu, the sub-divisional agriculture officer, Tobu, and various other stakeholders and leaders of the village.

The special invitee, in his speech, called upon all the people of Monyakshu village to uphold the spirit of such initiatives and to work hand in hand for mass participation towards the success of the vision. He also assured support for the initiative in whatever ways the administration can provide.

Forest Range Officer Tobu, Tongkem Konyak, in his speech, lauded the initiative and encouraged everyone to take it seriously, keeping in mind the various types of pollution being faced by the current generation.

He also expressed his concern about the single use of plastic and its impact on the environment. Furthermore, he encouraged the community to focus on the conservation of wildlife and biodiversity in the near future.

Earlier in the programme, an introduction to the Green Community Club was provided by Deputy Director, IPR, S Hongpi Konyak. Additionally, the medical officer at District Hospital Mon, Dr. S Nyamnyei Konyak, shared a PowerPoint presentation addressing various issues related to the use of plastic.

The programme was followed by the planting of saplings provided by the Forest department, Mon, and the Green Community Club, Monyakshu, along with the disposal and segregation of plastic waste.
