Funeral service for two persons, who went missing in Mon devastating landslides and flash floods, was held on Saturday after rescue teams called off search operations.
DIMAPUR — After six days of search operations, rescue teams on Friday called off the search for two people who remained missing at Thamnan ward in Mon town, after devastating landslides and flash floods triggered by incessant rain battered Mon district on July 19.
A funeral service was held on Saturday at Thamnan ward for the two victims--Pomei Konyak, a mother, and Pangho Konyak, a college student—whose bodies are yet to be recovered. The death toll from the tragic incident stands at nine.
Organised by the Konyak Baptist Church, Mon, the funeral service was attended by representatives of the Longkei Union Mon Town, Longkei Village Council, district administration, Konyak Union, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong, Konyak Students' Union, Thamnan Ward Union, district administration and community members.
Meanwhile, Mon district remains largely cut off due to extensive landslides caused by incessant rains, despite continuation of road restoration work. A member of Konyak Union (KU) had earlier told this newspaper that efforts were on since July 20 to restore the affected roads.
In a relief to residents, power supply was restored on July 25 evening after a six-day outage. The outage was caused by multiple faults on the 66kV Naginimora–Tizit transmission line triggered by incessant rainfall. Officials said the Power department has managed to restore electricity despite damaged roads and adverse weather.
