Search for two missing continues in Mon as restoration work progresses and Konyak Union seeks urgent government intervention
DIMAPUR — Rescue teams on Friday entered the sixth day of search operations for two people still missing in Thamnan ward of Mon town after devastating landslides and flash floods triggered by incessant rain battered Mon district on July 19.
As of filing this report, the bodies of the two victims—a college student and a woman—had not been recovered, and the death toll stood at nine.
Mon district remains largely inaccessible, with road restoration work still underway. "We have managed to clear only parts of the Tizit-Mon road for light motor vehicles," a Konyak Union (KU) member told Eastern Mirror.
Providing an update on Friday, the KU stated that restoration work began on July 20, with the union mobilising ‘13 excavators, one Poclain excavator and 10 loader dumpers’ requisitioned from private owners. The expenditure for the machinery is being met entirely through public contributions, it added.
Appealing for immediate government intervention, the KU urged the Roads and Bridges department and other line departments to support the ongoing restoration work to ensure its timely completion.

It also called on the District Disaster Management Authority, Mon, and the Agriculture and allied departments to immediately conduct field-level assessments of damaged properties and crop losses across the district and submit their reports to the government at the earliest.
The union further urged Konyak legislators to impress upon the state government the need to address the extensive economic losses suffered by the region, in line with the memorandum submitted through the deputy commissioner of Mon, on July 21.
It also appealed to the Health department to deploy a medical team at the relief camp set up at the KU office to respond to any medical emergencies.
