Mon district jail inmates get free legal aid
Dimapur, May 20 (EMN): Mon district legal services authority (DLSA) organised a legal awareness programme called “Equal Justice and Free Legal Aid” for the inmates of Mon district jail at the prison’s conference hall on May 18.
Seyielenuo Mezhii, CJM-cum-Secretary Mon District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA), in her keynote address during the programme told the gathering that free legal aid is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Indian constitution to every citizen of this country.
Asst. Jailor Thungdemo Kikon highlighted the status and condition of the under trial prisoners and convicts in the jail during the event, while Temsumeren APP spoke on rights of prisoners and basic human rights and M Moba PL spoke on legal services authority and free legal aid.
No under trial prisoner eligible for bail
The DLSA Mon also conducted the monthly under trial review committee (UTRCs) meeting at Mon district jail on May 20. However, no convict was released in pursuance of the recommendations of the UTPs during the meeting as not a single under trial prisoner (UTPs) was eligible to be released on bail.
A total of 39 UTPs and 13 convicts are reported in the jail, informed an update from Nagaland State Legal Services Authority. The meeting was attended by Seyeilenuo Mezhii CJM cum Secretary MDLSA Thavaseelan K, IAS, DC Mon; Imnalensa, IPS, SP Mon; and Thungdemo Kikon.
The Mon DC then inaugurated the library hall at the district jail after the meeting and Deputy Commissioner Mon donated books to the inmates.
