Dimapur, Aug. 6 (EMN): The Mon district administration is conducting a campaign named ‘Let Live’ as part of the girl child scheme Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. The campaign’s primary objective is to fight illegal sex determination, updates stated.

“This initiative is a first of its kind in the state to create community level awareness and participation on the evils of sex selection and abortion,” the government publicity agency, the department of Information and Public Relations (IPR), stated in its Tuesday updates to the media.

“Under this, an exclusive helpline number ‘6009150274’ has been setup so that cases of illegal sex determination can be reported. Other key features of this initiative being that informers will be rewarded and his/her identity will be kept confidential,” the IPR stated.

The Pre Conception and Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act gives this initiative a legal tooth as offences under this act are cognizable, non-bailable and non-compoundable, the IPR stated.

According to the IPR, Mon district has the “second worst child sex ratio in the state and hence improving the sex ratio at birth remains the primary goal of BBBP Mon.”

The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act is an Act of the Parliament of India enacted to stop female foeticides and arrest the declining sex ratio in the country. The Act banned prenatal sex determination. Every genetic counselling centre, genetic laboratory or genetic clinic engaged in counselling or conducting pre-natal diagnostics techniques such as In vitro fertilisation with the potential of sex selection before and after conception comes under the purview of the PCPNDT Act and these are banned.
