DIMAPUR — Mokokchung and Wokha units of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) are observing anti-malaria month by carrying various activities in villages bordering Assam and endemic localities during the month of June on the theme ‘Time to deliver zero malaria, invest, innovate, implement.’

An update from the chief medical officer (CMO), Mokokchung, stated that activities are being conducted in villages bordering Assam such as Mangkolemba, Tsurangkong and Tuli block.

Activities included malaria screening, malaria awareness meeting with villagers, distribution of pamphlets in local dialogue, miking, proper usage of long lasting insecticide nets (LLIN). It added that villagers were also encouraged to test for malaria from ASHA, survillance workers, health centres. It informed that no malaria case was detected during the screening.

It stated that Dr. Lhishelo Tsuhah, DVBO Mokokchung, Dr. Toshimongla, epidemiologist, and Imkummongba, DVBD consultant, also visited various health centres in Tuli, Mangkolemba, Changtongya and Tsurangkong and encouraged the health staff and ASHA to test all fever cases for malaria and to keep the reporting documentation updated.

In Wokha district activities are being conducted in selected villages basing on the prevalence of fever cases and hotspot areas.

Wezolo Medo, NVBDP district consultant, stated that the main objective of observing anti-malaria month was to create awareness among the community on preventive measures to be taken against the disease and to involve maximum stakeholders so that the message of prevention, early diagnosis and complete treatment reaches to all citizens.

During awareness camps, prevention of malaria, its signs and symptoms, modes of transmission, diagnosis, treatment, reduction of vector, use of long lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) etc were discussed with the community stakeholders.

With the help of the Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) in the district, house-to-house visit for checking on usage of LLIN was carried out and citizens were encouraged to regularly use it throughout the year.

It added that sanitation drives were also carried out in some villages with the help of the villagers where breeding sources were destroyed and removed. Besides, fever screening was also done in all the selected villages with the involvement of ASHA.
